My name is Leo Asuncion, president of the American Planning Association. 2021 will be a critical year for planners and the communities we serve. As communities begin to emerge from pandemic lockdowns, the work of recovering, rebuilding, and reinventing will be the focus driving much of what we planners do. It will also be the focus of the work of legislators on Capitol Hill. The 2021 American Planning Association’s Legislative Priorities reflect this significant moment. This is an opportunity to help guide federal priorities in the ways that we believe best serve our communities. Recovery. Broadband and transportation infrastructure. Housing. Climate change. These four issues are the priorities of the APA’s federal agenda this year. They are the areas we believe are most critical to ensure an equitable recovery and reinvention. Federal action on recovery, infrastructure, housing, and climate change, paired with the work of planners at the local and regional levels, presents an opportunity to ensure that recovery investments, made now, build a foundation for an equitable, resilient future. Planning is essential to an equitable recovery. In the days and months ahead, APA will carry that message to Capitol Hill and the White House. And with planners’ help, speaking out louder, together, we will secure the federal support communities need to begin the work of recovering, rebuilding, and reinventing for an equitable, resilient future.
